Now for an update and recap of our favorite city’s sports franchises. Boston sports have been looking great, with the exception of the Red Sox little speed bump, I’ll get into that later.

Let us start with the Bruins. New signee, former St.Louis Blues captain David Backes, is already working on fitting in. He will be throwing the first pitch at Fenway Park, before the Sox game against the Tigers on Wednesday. Backes signed a 5 year for 30 million deal. He expressed his excitement, about being able to play along side Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci, “these guys get it” he said “They know what it’s going to take to win. That’s what sold me on it. … If you have prominent players that are putting team first, the rest of the guys really have no choice” great to hear his enthusiasm, to get ready and get to work.

The Celtics made some more moves by signing free-agent swingman Gerald Green to a one year 1.4 million deal, they have also agreed to a two-year, $16 million deal, with restricted free agent Tyler Zeller. Both will be returning to the team that drafted them, Green being drafted 18th overall in 2005, and Zeller being taken 17th over all in 2012. The signing of these two is evidence that Boston is done with the big moves and are happy with what they have to work with.

The Patriots top draft pick Cyrus Jones has reportedly been making an impression at training camp. Fellow defensive back and New England captain Devin McCourty had this to say, when asked who stood out to him the most, “Cyrus Jones, one of the Alabama guys, very similar to how High [Dont’a Hightower] came in — understands the defense, knows what he’s doing out there”. The 22 year old, 5’10” 200-pound Jones, who returned 46 punts at Alabama for 618 yards and four touchdowns, has also been working out at punt and kick returner. These reports are comforting, showing that Malcom Butler and Mccourty will have some help.

The New England Revolution, have been playing remarkably. Over the last four matches, they have gone 3-1-0. This has moved them up the Eastern Conference table 2 spots to 6th. With 26 points, the Revs are in prime position to continue to move up the standings, a few more wins could possibly move them up to 4th place. Its also MLS All-Star game time, and great defender Andrew Farrel, will be the Revolution’s representative against Arsenal. The match will be held July 28th at Avaya Stadium in San Jose, California.

Now its time for my favorite boys in red socks. The Sox have gone 2-3 since Drew Pomeranz’s first start. They split the four game series against the twins, and have lost the first game of the series against the Tigers. This slump has dropped Boston in the AL East to 2.5 games behind Baltimore and only a half game above Toronto. There is some good news though, Pomeranz pitched great his second start, even though he got the loss. He went 6 innings surrendering only 2 runs, with 7 strikeouts to go along with it. It was the Sox offense that failed to show up against Justin Verlander, who got his first win against Boston in over 5 years. The bullpen once again failed to be consistent these past five games, surrending many late inning runs, with the August 1st trade deadline approaching, Sox GM Ben Cherington needs to acquire a reliever that can get late inning outs, for this team to have playoff hopes.

Well those are the updates, take em’ or leave em’

Homer out.
